driver-and-passengerDo you prefer to be the driver or the passenger?

I keep hearing that in life, we should all be striving to be “the one behind the wheel”, in charge of getting us to our destination.  Claiming the driver’s seat is like taking control of our future, I guess.

I can understand that, but I don’t see taking the passenger seat as a sign of weakness, either.

When I am the driver, I can only focus on the road.  I must stare straight ahead pretty much all of the time.  I have to be careful and precise.  I can’t screw up.

When I am the driver, I have to watch the road.

Keep your eyes on the prize.

Get to the destination.

When I am the passenger, I am so much more relaxed.

I am able to look out the window and really see what is around me.

I have the freedom to nap when I want to, read if I want to, or just enjoy the scenery.

I can help the driver get to our destination by being a good navigator, but for the most part I just enjoy the ride.

I guess this means that in life, I don’t mind sitting back and trusting that I will get where I need to go.  I don’t need to control everything…

…especially if it means I won’t be able to relax and enjoy the scenery on the way there.
